(a way too complicated minecraft mod idea)
Requires PaperMC (multiple instances)
Requires Velocity
Object 1: Schrödinger’s Observer (proper). Constructed with mossy cobblestone, I gold Ingot, redstone dust.
When activated in-hand, SO allows you to chose from a list of mincraft versions. When confirmed, the player is transferred to that version, to a world with the same seed number.
Chunk generation and block placement is retro-causal. If you generate spawn chunks in 1.21, then travel back to 1.18, 1.18 will generate it’s own chunks, and those will replace the chunks of the 1.21 world iteration. Any blocks places in 1.18 will be immediately placed in 1.21 – and 1.20.
When a SO is used, it burns out. It is single use.
Object 2: Temporal Lode. When a SO is placed, it places as a temporal lode. This locks generation to the version it’s placed. All other versions not generate or are replaced with barrier blocks filling the lode chunks.
If a SO has not been used, the TL can me mined. This removes the lock on other versions of the world.
If the SO has been used, the TL can not be mined.
Holding an SO clearly shows all current locked regions.
Object 3: The Temporal Chest. Crafting a Normal chest and a used SO creates a temporal chest. A used SO makes a chest that acts as a normal chest in the version it was used, but as a take-only chest in the destination version. Essentially, it’s the way to get items to the past of future safely. If an item is not available in that version – say, you try to transfer bamboo to 1.14 – it converts into mossy cobblestone.
An unused SO can not be crafted into a Temporal chest.
New Behaviours
The standard chest can transfer item forward in world versions. a apple can be add in 1.12 and taken out in 1.15 – and would be remove in 1.15 an 1.12 versions of the chest synchronously.
Standard player inventory would not be preserved when traveling between world versions. Your 1.14 inventory stays in 1.14 – you don’t lose it.
Ender Chest inventories are shared between world versions – with the unknown item to mossy cobblestone caveat. Just don’t take out mossy cobblestone.
Exceptions
A chest is placed in 1.10. An apple is put into slot 1 in 1.11. A leaf block is put into slot 1 in 1.10 without removing the apple. The apple is destroyed.
A chunk is generated in 1.10. A chest is placed in that chunk in 1.11 and filled with dirt. A chest is placed at the same coordinates in 1.10. the 1.11 chest full of dirt is destroyed with no traces.
A spawn chunk is generated in 1.21. The player travels back to 1.20. The non-existant spawn chunk generates in 1.20 and propagates to 1.21. The player travels back to 1.19. The non-existant spawn chunk generates in 1.19 and propagates to 1.21 and 1.20. Temporal locking at the starting vorld version is recommended for the first built SO.
Temporal chests persist, and can be reached normally (5 or so block reaching range), in time-locked zones. While holding an SO, they have a beacon-like effect.
